Our Liturgical Artists
Gherardi puts the final touches on the
background design surrounding the statue of The Risen Christ at Our Holy Redeemer Church
in Palm City, Florida. Sketches of this project along with many others are on
display at our main store. |
ANGELO GHERARDI
Liturgical Artist/Designer
- The artist responsible for many ground-breaking designs in
the past 50 years is Mr. Angelo Gherardi. Since 1948, Gherardi has designed
liturgical settings, mosaic works, stained glass windows and renovations for more than 300
churches nationwide.
Gherardi attended the School of Design in LaSpezia and studied art
in Florence. When his family left Italy to move to the United States, he began studies at
the Art Institute of Chicago. Gherardi has received many awards and recognition for his
work, including an award for "Excellence in Design Work in the United States"
from the Italian Chamber of Commerce.
You can find hundreds of examples of Gherardi's work across
the country. These have included projects at Cathedrals in Little Rock, Arkansas and
Nashville, Tennessee; as well as the restoration of St. Joseph's Cathedral in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, that was heavily damaged in the 1995 bombing.
His most gratifying accomplishments were his selection as the designer for the setting for
Pope John Paul II's Papal Mass in 1979 at Chicago's Grant Park and at the 1999 Papal Mass
in St. Louis.

- When asked if that was his most challenging project,
Gherardi replied,
- "This might sound immodest. I love any challenge. I
never found a boring customer or a boring project. I enjoy every minute of it and I intend
to keep going as long as I can."

Bishop's Chair: After carving the doors for the chapel at St. Mary's Hospital in
Centralia, Illinois, Khechoyan was inspired to create this bishop's chair. This piece and
others are often on display at our main store.

- BORIS KHECHOYAN
- Master Woodcarver
Boris Khechoyan came to the United States in 1992 with a box of handmade
tools and his portfolio. He immediately took top awards at that year's International
Woodcarvers Congress- and the next year's and the next. He was one of only 100 artists
invited to the 1994 Midwest Salute to the Masters. In 1996, he won the grand prize in a
national clock-carving contest.
Khechoyan began carving almost 20 years ago at the Azerbajan College
of Fine Arts in the USSR. He then studied design at the University of Architecture in
Baku, meanwhile deepening his knowledge of Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, Empire and Classical
carving. At the special Scientific Restoration Workshop, he restored antique museum
furniture dating back to the 15th century, and developed his talent for inlaid wood,
incrustations, Mother of Pearl, bone work and hand carving. He also carved doors, windows
and architectural details both within and outside the ancient walls of Old City of Baku.
Khechoyan began winning awards in national exhibitions while still a student. After he
took first place in one of the major exhibitions, his work was sent to Moscow's Hall of
the People. Named a lifetime member of the Woodcarvers Association of Armenia while still
in his 20s, Khechoyan holds a master's certificate earned by only a fraction of Armenian
woodcarvers.

becoming more precious with age. The Demetz Art Studio also crafts in fiberglass, custom
metal castings such as bronze, sculptured white carrara marble, and executions in venetian
mosaics.
